Master page numbers and sections

Page numbering is a fundamental element of editorial design. Often overlooked as an important piece of design in its own right, clear pagination requires a solid understanding of typefaces, type weights and structure. It's a crucial part of navigation that enables readers to flick through books and magazines at speed, to find their required page.

This project shows you how to create clear page numbers and sections across three different mediums - leaflets, magazines and books - for an imaginary royalty-free image library, 'Urban'. We will demonstrate the importance of getting to grips with master pages using InDesign, and show you how to produce effective automatic page numbering for documents ranging in length from eight pages to 160 pages. We will also look at InDesign CS3's Book and Printing Booklet features.
