Elon Musk’s new SpaceXAI logo looks surprisingly familiar

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI has finally merged with his aerospace company, SpaceX, debuting with a brand new logo and name (no points for guessing what it's called). The aptly smooshed-together SpaceXAI marks a homogenised new brand catalogue for the billionaire, unifying Musk's space, social and AI business ventures.

From its debut back in 2023, the xAI logo caused contention among designers thanks to its allegedly wonky design, so many will likely be happy to see its departure. It turns out the SpaceXAI logo is just as divisive, but this time, it's for an unexpected reason.

Akin to its name, the new SpaceXAI logo is an amalgamation of both brands, incorporating the futuristic swoop of SpaceX with the bold structures of the former xAI logo. The result is something that, to me at least, resembles a logo for a high-street sports apparel brand (ahem, Reebok) – perhaps not quite the future-forward mega-brand identity that Musk was after.

The name change debuted on X alongside an animation of the new logo, sparking some spicy remarks from critics. "Phonetically and for graphic design, this is terrible branding," one wrote, while another added, "merging the companies was a great call, but this name sucks so much, and the logo sucks so much." Others were in agreement that the design "looks like a throwback to Reebok," but some held out hope that the name would be subject to change.
