"Looks fire" gamers say of Bethesda's nostalgic new logo design

Bethesda has a new logo design, and it has so much character that it's hard not to approve. It also demonstrates that clean legibility doesn't always need to be the priority in brand design.

The boring utilitarian aesthetic of the brand's most recent identity, which had been in use since 2010, has given way to a more inspired, evocative and playful design. The retro futurist reminds us how long the publisher behind Halo and Elder Scrolls has been in business while also making it clear that this is a video game company not an architectural firm or a provider of digital security solutions.

Named after a town in Maryland, Bethesda Softworks was founded in 1986. Its first release was the Amiga favourite American football Gridiron! and it soon upped its ambition with The Terminator in 1991.

The new logo was designed to commemorate the company's 40 years in business. With a cyberpunk-like aesthetic, the typeface chosen is a clear nod to the company's original branding.

While the most recent design adopted a clean, minimalist corporate look using the same square icon as parent ZeniMax Media, earlier identities were much more stylised. The new design also brings back the 'Softworks' part of the brand name that was dropped in 2010.

From 1986 to 1993, Bethesda games featured a fairly abstract hand-drawn 'B' and 'S' logo design with a rainbow gradient.

At the same time, the developer and publisher also used a white on grey wordmark with distinctive type made of elongated angular geometric letterforms for a more industrial feel. The new design is a direct reference to this design, which was used up until the year 2000.

It's not clear if the new design will be used long-term or if it's only for this anniversary year, but gamers wholeheartedly approve of a design that's evoking memories of titles like The Terminator and Daggerfall.

"The first logo redesign in recent memory that doesn't suck!" one person writes on X. Bethesda has responded to say it's going to frame that quote, so perhaps that will help persuade it to stick with the new design.
