Make your pictures come to life with realistic movement

With a little help from Adobe Firefly's AI tools, it's easy to craft brand-new video clips which breathe life into your favourite images.

A great still image captures a moment in time, but we find that short video clips are sometimes better for really capturing someone's attention. Thankfully, it's not hard to bring still images to life using Adobe's generative AI.

Select your AI model and video settings

Adobe Firefly lets you choose between a few different AI models when it comes to animating your still images.

You can select your AI model at the top left under General Settings. It's probably set to Firefly Video by default, but if it's not then it's worth starting with the Firefly Video while you learn the ropes.

Below this you can specify your video's resolution, aspect ratio, frames per second and duration. You might want to switch from a widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio to square (1:1) or vertical (9:16), depending on where you want to share the final video.

Before you upload anything, you'll see options on the left for composition, camera, style and advanced. These include the option to upload reference videos so Generate Video can copy the outlines, composition and camera motion. You can also set the animation style and elect for a transparent background.

Take note that some of your options on the left will disappear when you upload images and keyframes.

Select your images

Don't feel that you're limited to sketches and illustrations, as you'll see it can do an impressive job of bringing photos of real people to life.

Make sure you have the rights to use the image that you're loading, which shouldn't be a problem if it's your own photo. Your content will not be used to train generative AI models.

Alternatively, you can generate images using the 'Text to image' feature in Firefly and use that image to generate your video.

Thankfully, Adobe Firefly's Generate Video feature produces commercially-safe outputs, so you don't need to worry about copyright issues even if they're for business use.

Getting started to add movement to photos

When you upload an image, it's automatically set as the first keyframe image, which means it is the starting point of your video. There's also the option to upload an end keyframe, which will be the end point of your video.

If your image doesn't match the selected aspect ratio, a crop tool automatically appears on top, with the edges greyed out, so you can decide how you want to crop the image.

Enter your prompt

If you've uploaded only the first keyframe, you need to enter a text prompt describing what you want to happen in your video. If you've uploaded both the first and end keyframe images, providing a prompt is optional, but it still helps to add one.

We started with "Make these people move around", but you can be a lot more creative.

Once you've written your prompt, you can also use the 'Enhance prompt option' next to the Generate button to ask Firefly for assistance in writing the perfect prompt to get your desired result.

In this example we think it got a bit carried away, with the prompt morphing the scene into an animated dance number, but you can keep honing ideas until you're happy.

Generate your video

Click Generate and Adobe Firefly does its magic, with my original "Make these people move around" prompt resulting in a very life-like video.

Keep in mind, if there's a blue offer notification such as "Get unlimited generations in Firefly for all AI image models" on the screen, you might need to click the x to dismiss the notification before you can click Generate.

After the video generation is complete, it will appear in your history strip, ready for download as an MP4 file. You could also go to the Generation History tab on the Files page, where all generated images and videos are auto-saved.

It's that simple! You can try out the free Adobe Firefly Generate Video feature for yourself to help bring your favourite images to life.
