Autodesk’s SIGGRAPH announcements look unrelated, but they all solve the same huge problem

Autodesk has made a number of big announcements at SIGGRAPH 2026, so what does it tell us about where creativity is heading in 3D art and design? Whether it's news on AI animation for MotionMaker in Maya, Gaussian Splats in 3ds Max, review tools in Flow Production Tracking, real-time Arnold viewport rendering in Maya, the individual announcements look scattered, but they all point to one bigger shift: Autodesk wants to close the gap between you having an idea and seeing it appear on screen, and that gap is still surprisingly large even in 2026.

For all the advances in 3D, animation and visual effects, modern production can still involve a lot of waiting, whether that’s getting a character to animate how you need, hanging around for a scene to render or being on the hook for feedback from a director, client or another artist working halfway around the world. Some workflows still need you to hang on while someone rebuilds a real-world object or location that already exists, when Gaussian Splats exist.

Autodesk’s SIGGRAPH 2026 announcements are all aimed at those moments where creativity gets slowed down by process. The company has updates coming to Maya, 3ds Max, Flow Production Tracking and Arnold, and while each one tackles a different part of the workflow, the bigger picture is aimed at making the 3D pipeline less of a series of separate stages and more of a connected creative space where you can move faster, experiment more and spend less time on the repetitive stuff no one enjoys.

AI animation that still puts the animator in charge

The biggest talking point is probably MotionMaker in Maya, which is getting a new ‘Bring Your Own Data’ feature that lets teams train custom generative motion models using their own animation datasets. That means studios can use their own rigs, motion capture, and even hand-keyed animation to create models that understand the kind of movement they are trying to achieve. This builds on the MotionMaker AI tools announced in September last year, and still puts animators in control of how the AI is used and when, because once trained, MotionMaker can generate a foundation for animation, but artists still work inside Maya with the familiar tools they already know, so you’ll still need to take control where it matters, by tweaking curves in the Graph Editor, adjusting timing in the Time Editor, and refining details in the Dope Sheet.

The conversation around AI in creative software often jumps straight to replacement, but Autodesk’s pitch here is much more about removing the grind, as it did when it showed off Flow Studio’s new features that turn character creation and animation into a single process. Because nobody enjoys spending hours blocking out basic movement when the real creative challenge is how a character feels, performs and tells a story. For smaller teams especially, the ability to build a reusable animation model could be a big deal, as it will get you closer to the interesting work faster.

3D worlds without rebuilding everything from scratch

3ds Max continues to be important for Autodesk, and at SIGGRAPH it announced support for 3D Gaussian Splats, one of the more interesting technologies to emerge from the recent wave of AI and real-world capture tools. If you’ve followed the development of AI-generated environments and new scanning techniques, you’ll have seen how quickly Gaussian Splats have become one of the most talked-about new ways of capturing and working with real-world environments.

The appeal is simple: rather than manually modelling every detail of a real location, you can capture an object or environment as 3D data and bring it into your workflow. But Autodesk isn’t treating these as simple scans to drop into a scene and forget about, because in 3ds Max, Gaussian Splats become editable, allowing artists to combine captured environments with traditional modelling, animation and scene-building techniques. That opens up some interesting possibilities; for example, a filmmaker could capture a real location, bring it into a CG workflow, adjust it, light it, combine it with digital elements and continue shaping it rather than rebuilding the entire thing. Autodesk also says you will be able to bring environments created with tools such as World Labs Marble into 3ds Max, which points to another big shift happening across the industry: AI-generated worlds are now starting points for a project rather than being pitched as the endpoint. AI is now the point where a blank canvas gets sketched out, and artists build on it, not the magic bullet many saw it as a couple of years ago.

The boring problems might be where the biggest wins are

Not every update announced by Autodesk is flashy, and the reveal is that Flow Production Tracking is getting Review, a new experience designed to make collaboration easier for post-production teams. Instead of jumping between different tools and versions, artists, directors and clients can review media, compare shots, add feedback and collaborate in the same environment.

That might sound like a small workflow improvement, and it’s not as grabby as ‘AI animation will change everything,’ but anyone who has worked on a large – or even a small personal – production knows how much time disappears into version confusion and endless feedback loops where opinions, amends, changes and notes can pile up. Then there’s Arnold interactive viewport rendering in Maya, which tackles another familiar frustration: waiting to see what your changes actually look like. Being able to see Arnold-quality results directly in the viewport means you can adjust lighting, materials and composition and immediately understand the impact your changes will make, for good and bad. The faster that feedback loop becomes, the more room there is to experiment and the more creative you can feel.

The future of 3D is focused on ideas not process

The interesting thing about Autodesk’s SIGGRAPH announcements is that none of these tools exists in isolation; they all fit together or link into other areas and tools. MotionMaker creates animation faster, Gaussian Splats bring real-world spaces into digital workflows, Arnold speeds up visual decisions, and Flow keeps teams connected. Together they paint a picture of a future where you – the artist – will spend less time moving through a production checklist and more time shaping ideas and doing the things that really matter.

Of course, there are still big questions around AI, particularly around training data, ownership and how creative roles evolve – those conversations aren’t going away – but the direction Autodesk is pushing is pretty clear: the next generation of creative tools isn’t about removing artists from the process; it’s about removing the barriers that get in their way.
