I've reviewed a fair few ergonomic office chairs over the years, and the ones that really stick with me tend to share a few qualities: they're comfortable for long stretches, they're built to last, represent good value for money, and they look good enough that you don't mind them being the centrepiece of your home office.
The Autonomous ErgoChair Ultra 2 ticks all four boxes, and I should know – I'm currently in the middle of reviewing it. And right now it's $100 off at the official Autonomous site, bringing it down to $399. The grey colour-way is also matched at that price on Amazon. All and all, it's definitely going to make my list of the best office chairs for back pain, once I've finished my in-depth review.
$399 is a strong price for what is, in my testing so far, a solid and well-engineered chair. If you're after something with a bit more visual personality than the usual mesh slab, while still delivering the ergonomic chops to justify the spend, this one deserves a serious look.
Autonomous ErgoChair Ultra 2: $499 $399 at Autonomous.com
Save $100: The chair is currently $100 off at Autonomous's official site, with free shipping. The same discount applies to the grey colourway over on Amazon too, so you've got flexibility on where you buy. This brings a genuinely premium, distinctively designed ergonomic chair into mid-range territory – and at $399, it's well worth it.
What makes the ErgoChair Ultra 2 different?
On the surface, the ErgoChair Ultra 2 looks like a premium office chair doing premium office chair things. But spend a little time with it and the details start to reveal themselves. The most striking is the exoskeleton backrest; a web of structural arms supporting a mesh lining, rather than the usual hard perimeter frame. It sounds like an aesthetic quirk, but it has a real functional benefit: the edges of the backrest are just as giving as the centre, so there are no hard pressure points when you lean back and let the chair take your weight.
Beneath the seat cushion, things get even more interesting. Autonomous has used 3D-printed TPE helical springs arranged across the entire seat base, sitting above an air gap that gives the cushion a subtle, lively bounce. It's not bouncy in an annoying way: it's more that the seat feels alive and responsive rather than static, wrapping around you rather than just supporting you from below.
In short, this is a comfortable, durable chair with just enough aesthetic difference from the competition to make it a nice addition to a home environment. And that makes it an easy recommendation for anyone wanting a solid ergonomic chair that doesn't look like every other one on the market.
