In the age of AI, Joseph Weston continues to create art for the simple reason that he enjoys doing it. “What matters is how much fun I have when I’m creating it,” he says. “Only then can you access the transcendent truth of art".
He uses both a digital workflow in Photoshop and traditional pencils and crayons (see our guides to the best drawing tablets and the best pencils for artists). Below, he presents four examples of his work.
My first Magic card
“Really, my main goal with this was to convey a feeling of fantastical whimsy that befits the universe of Magic: The Gathering.”
Lord Oily Lawson
“This guy is absolutely stark raving nuts. I don’t think that he even knows his own name, innit.”
The Hero
“I was looking at some old painter I can’t remember, and I liked the gesture of his strokes. This was also inspired by the look of a certain game at the time.”
Swerto
“This one is just a cool undead guy. This channels the fun of looking at my Art of World of Warcraft book that I read back in 7th grade.”
