It's going to be another big summer for super heroes. Ahead of Spider-Man Brand New Day in July, the new Supergirl movie is coming to the big screen as part of the DC Universe.
Warner Bros and DC just dropped a new Supergirl trailer, and while it's sparked more interest from fans than the first one, it's also led to a surprising movie comparison.
The new Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) and produced by James Gunn. It will see Milly Alcock bring a fresh take on Superman's biological cousin Kara Zor-El.
Article continues belowThe new trailer has sparked a wave of excitement, particularly over the appearance of Jason Momoa as Lobo, which could tie the movie into the wider DC Universe. Others are enthusiastic about the film's faithfulness to Tom King's original Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, with its darker themes of trauma and revenge.
However, one aspect of the plotline in particular has caught people's attention: Supergirl's mission to save her dog Krypto after he's shot with an arrow by the ruthless space pirate Krem of the Yellow Hills. Thanks to the trailer's fast-paced action sequences, people have immediately drawn parallels with the John Wick movies, with some questioning whether they can take the storyline seriously.
While some welcome the decision to respect the comic, others appear to have hoped for a lighter movie, suggesting that Supergirl's taking a “nihilistic tone” and “trying too hard to be edgy”. “Superman: Positivity. Supergirl: PTSD,” one person writes. Others suggest the cosmic setting makes it look like a Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
Supergirl will be released on 26 June.
