Fantasy and adventure allowed this artist to rekindle the inspirations of his creative youth
Ron Sanders previously designed coins for the US mint.
The US-based artist Ron Sanders was inspired by fantasy and adventure stories in his creative youth, but his career took him more in the direction of historical art, which included designing coins for the United States Mint. Now, he’s returned to his early inspirations.
While he's experienced in a wide range of 2D media, including digital techniques, Ron found his true love in oil painting. Influenced by European academic realism, impressionism and fantasy illustration, he depicts heroism, action, and adventure, often seeking to reflect a battle between light and dark, good and evil. He follows a methodical approach, building from concept to composition, developing line art, value and color studies, and finally texture and details.
Below, Ron talks us through three examples of his work. If you need to replenish your own supplies, see our guide to the best oil paints. And if you need some pointers, see our tips on how to use oil paints.
Golden Knight
“I enjoy applying my experience with historical subjects and traditional methods of oil painting to my lifetime love of fantasy subjects, including this golden-haired knight.”
Sword Bearer
“My daughter posed for this image; I definitely prefer working from my own photos of models whenever possible. I have acquired a good collection of props and costumes.”
'Strider' at The Prancing Pony.
“One of my most recent oil paintings, from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I love being visually inspired when reading a scene in a book or from a brief.”
