If you’re using a desktop PC for anything involving throwing pixels around a screen, you’ll want a dedicated graphics processor in it. The integrated solutions you find in lower-end laptops and mini PCs are mostly OK, but they eventually run out of steam when faced with lots of video effects or multi-layered Photoshop documents. The enormous processing power of an RTX 5080, which comes with 6GB of ultra-fast memory all to itself, clears out all those bottlenecks.
It’s pricey, but this card comes with a few extra bonuses. It’s slightly overclocked, with a boost speed a little faster than Nvidia’s own FE model, and is reasonably slim to fit in a greater range of PC cases and external docks.

Design and features

There's very little to say about a PCIe card that’s meant to be on the inside of your PC. PNY’s two-fan design reveals a heat sink that looks not too dissimilar to some CPU coolers, and when compared to Nvidia’s RTX 5080 FE board the whole thing is slimmer and slightly wider. This may cause an issue with getting it into small PC cases, so make sure you check the dimensions before you take the plunge if you’re a fan of cases like the Fractal Terra (which can just take the FE card without too much screwdriver action, but struggles to accommodate the PNY). Being a ‘slim’ board, it’s built to only take up two slots, so will work in some SFF builds (mainly at the larger end) as long as you’ve got the length to fit it in your case. Many eGPU docks can take a three-slot card, but the size of this model opens up the use of more compact enclosures without needing to step down to something like the RTX 5060 or even Nvidia’s own A1000.
Like all top-end Nvidia cards, the PNY uses the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector, in this case buried slightly between the two lobes of the cooling system and a little fiddly to access as a result. We found it was best to connect the power connector before settling it into its PCIe slot, but this will depend on the case and position of your PSU. There's an adapter in the box to convert three eight-pin PSU connections to a single 16-pin, if your PSU doesn’t support it natively, a feature aimed at upgraders from 2000- and 3000-series cards. It will still need to be an 850W model, though.
On the back you’ll find three DisplayPorts and an HDMI - full-size ones so no extra dongles are required - and there's a little bit of PNY and GeForce branding. Otherwise, it’s a long black rectangle that was only meant to be seen through a PC’s side window, and looks the part.

Performance

The obvious card to compare the PNY Slim OC to is Nvidia’s own FE card, which is also a two-fan, two-slot design. The cards have the same number of CUDA cores on board (10752), but the PNY’s boost speed of 2730MHz is greater than that of the FE (2620MHz). Their TGP figures are the same - 360W - and they both have 16GB of GDDR7 memory. It looks like being a close race.
In the end, it comes down to the smallest of margins. The PNY just edges it in our tests, which were carried out in the same PC using the same drivers, with the closest result seen in the Geekbench 6 GPU benchmark, where the FE scored 285,963 and the PNY 285,965, a difference of just two points, or 0.000699389%. It’s entirely possible that some sort of margin of error may be in play here.
In the Cinebench 2026 rendering test, there was a bit more of a gap: 112,971 against 114,112, or 1.00492% in the PNY card’s favour. It’s easy to call it a draw, and the same pattern was seen in the other tests we performed, with the PNY marginally in front but not by any kind of significant margin. When you’re blowing past 400fps in 3D Mark's Wild Life Extreme, the little differences cease to matter.
AI applications, naturally, quail before the RTX 5080. In our Topaz Video AI benchmark, which tests the enhancement of, and creation of slow-mo footage from, 1080p video, this 5080 scores better than the equivalent card in the Acer Predator Orion 7000 gaming PC by over 200 points (or almost 11%) in the combined cycle. This may be put down to its slightly faster clock speed, the AMD CPU in the PC we tested the PNY card in having more cores and being slightly newer than the Acer’s Intel chip, or the improvements made in driver software since we reviewed that PC back at the end of 2025.
There's only one conclusion to draw from this, and that’s that the RTX 5080 chipset is super-powerful, and it doesn’t make an enormous difference which board you buy, as long as it fits in your PC, so you may as well choose based on price.

Price
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 FE has an RRP of $999 or £1,039, though good luck finding one. The PNY 5080 OC Slim sells for prices in the region of $1,377.99 or £1,279.99, which still looks like a bargain against something like the ASUS ROG Astral 5080 card, which can be found for around $1,843.99 or £1,679.99. The price of electronics, particularly GPUs and anything with a lot of RAM on it, has soared recently, and these cards are premium investments. The 5080 is still cheaper than the 5090, though.
