Forget Prime Day, B&H Photo has $200 off the biggest portable SSD you could ever possibly need

The Amazon Prime Day members' sale is in full swing, and we've highlighted some great savings, including several Prime Day laptop deals and iPad deals. But despite this being Amazon's biggest annual sale, it isn't beating other retailers on every deal.

As a case in point, B&H Photo is running its own limited-time sale to gatecrash Prime Day, and it's beating Amazon on the price of one the biggest portable external SSDs that we've tested. For the next eight hours only, it has the Crucial x10 8TB reduced by $200 from $899 to $699.

The best Prime Day Portable SSD deal isn't at Amazon

The X10 range of portable SSD's might not have the 'Pro' tag, but they're just as fast as the X10 Pros, providing up to 2,100MB/s on a good laptop. That kind of speed makes this hugely capacious SSD a solid option for video editing directly from the external drive.

A massive 8TB of storage space remains a relatively rare capacity for an SSD, but the reality is that high-resolution video files are so big that anything smaller can fill up relatively quickly.

We reviewed this SSD in July last year soon after it was released. Our reviewer gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars, highlighting the quality and reliability of the solid, palm-sized dust and splash-proof build as well as the transfer speeds.

Price comparison: Like RAM prices, SSD prices have been rising significantly because of the AI boom as memory manufacturers are prioritise high-profit NAND flash and DRAM chips for enterprise data centers, causing supply shortages and higher costs for consumer-grade drives. That means that discounts are smaller than usual this Prime Day.

Amazon is offering the 8GB Crucial X10 for $854.99, a discount of just $55, compared to the saving of $200 at B&H Photo. But the clock's ticking, B&H's deal ends today.
