CB at 10 Awards: Tech of the Decade
Winner: iPad Pro
The iPad Pro wins with 37.63 per cent of the vote. While Apple's first iPad introduced us all to the benefits of a tablet, it wasn't really until the release of iPad Pro in 2015 that the benefits for artists really tool hold. At 12.9-inch (a smaller 9.7-inch model also launched) it was larger than the standard iPad, offering a perfectly proportioned screen for digital art. Read our iPad Pro (M1) review to see why this tablet is still the best around.
While initially reticent to release a stylus for iPad, the Pro meant a new way to interact was necessary – the Apple Pencil released shortly after the iPad Pro and enabled a new level of connectivity – before this we used, and loved, third-party stylus from the likes of Adonit, and even some swish ones that replicated the feel of brushes. (Take a look at our guide to the best Apple Pencil alternatives for more.)
We're now into the 5th Gen of the iPad Pro, which uses the new-ish M1 chip and is now running on the iPadOS15 that enables 5GB of RAM for apps – meaning it can run more powerful software, a standout of which is Procreate 5.2.
The power and flexibility of iPad Pro means even the older models are still well worth getting, and as we're all trying to save money these days don't overlook these versions. To learn more, read our iPad Pro 12.9-inch (M1, 2021) review.
