The portable SSD that saved my career has over $100 off for Cyber Monday
SSDs are one of those essential piece of creative gear we all loathe buying. There's nothing exiting about them, they're way too expensive when there's not a sale on, and the one your thought would be big enough never is.
That said, I couldn't work without one, so it's good to see that the beefy 4TB drive that once seriously saved my bacon (I'll bore you with the details below) is reduced to an actually quite reasonable price. Amazon US has the Samsung 4TB T9 SSD reduced by $101 from $399 to $298.99. And it's £299.99 in the UK
It's not the only option, mind – see our bumper guide to Black Friday and Cyber Monday external hard drive deals for more savings.
The best Cyber Monday Portable SSD deal
This compact and durable SSD provides speeds of up to 2,000MB/s. I've found it nippy enough for transferring large batches of 4K video to and from my laptop and desktop PC. I even work directly from the drive if I need to edit while I'm out. Having used it on pretty much every trip I've made in the past 18 months, I'm happy with its reliability.
UK deal: £360.79 £299.99 at Amazon
SSDs are normally one of the most boring tech items to shop for, but this one has particular resonance with me since it saved a job that I should have gone to better prepared. I was on a production at a hotel in the south of Argentina, where I was working on the ground, and a colleague, an FPV drone pilot, was doing aerial shots.
At the end of the first day of a three-day shoot, all camera memory cards were full. My colleague had come straight from another job and hadn't had time to make space on his MacBook, and I'd come armed only with a 1TB SSD as a back up. That would have been OK for me, but not to take my colleague's video too.
No problem, he'd upload his material, he reckoned, not accounting for painfully slow internet speeds in remote Patagonia. By the end of dinner, his first clip was still loading. Luckily a member of staff saw our our panic, asked us what the problem was, and happened to have this 4TB beast of an SSD that he lent us, saving the production and our jobs in the process (I trust he never told his boss what amateur's he'd hired).
I promptly vowed never again to be a cheapskate buying 1TB SSDs. I got one of these bad boys and it's travelled with me everywhere since then.
